Edinburgh Airport History

Edinburgh Airport was, in its original form, known as Turnhouse Aerodrome and was a British air defence base used in World War I. The name was changed to RAF Turnhouse in 1918 when the Ministry of Defence gained ownership of the airfield, and RAF Fighter Command took control of the airfield in World War II.

It wasn’t until the late 1940s that the airfield was first used for commercial services and in 1971 the airport was expanded with a new runway and terminal building, by the new owners the British Airports Authority.

In 2005, a new 57m tall air traffic control tower was completed and in 2006 the terminal was extended, known as ‘South East Pier’. The airport is expected to be expanded in the future, with passenger numbers rising.
