London Gatwick Airport History
During 1931 Gatwick was growing as a flying club and in 1934, Gatwick was granted its first public license which allowed commercial aircraft to be used there. A new railway station was opened, running services on the Victoria to Brighton line in 1935.
The world’s first circular terminal, known as the ‘Beehive’ was opened in 1936. During World War II, the airport was used by the RAF and in 1946 the airport operated for civilian use with a small number of charter airlines.
In 1958, after extensive building words to build the ‘new London Airport’, Her Majesty The Queen officially opened Gatwick Airport. The Queen also opened the new North Terminal in 1988.
More additions to the airport were completed in 1994, with the opening of the new North Terminal International Departures Lounge, and in 2000, the new extension to the North and South Terminals were opened, offering more passenger facilities such as additional seating, retail and restaurants.
