History
Abu Dhabi International Airport is a relatively modern airport. It was built in 1982 to replace Al Bateen Executive Airport as the main international airport serving Abu Dhabi.
The airport site originally covered a total area of 1,700 hectares and was designed to handle up to 3.5 million passengers per year. The airport was deliberately built away from the city centre in order to allow for expansion in the future.
The extensive expansion project saw the completion of Terminal 3 in 2009, an award winning FBO, and plans for the construction of a second 4,100 metre runway which will enable the airport to handle aircraft up to the Airbus A380.
The expansion project will also include the construction of several remote aircraft stand, which can be used by corporate aircraft.
