Rafael Hernández Airport History

Rafael Hernández Airport was originally an active military installation until 1974, when it was changed to a civilian airport.

The airport was named after Puerto Rican composer, Rafael Hernandez Marin.

In 2012 the airport became a US "free trade zone" in an effort to improve development of the surrounding area and drive more tourism.
