History
The airport opened on 22nd June 1968 and was called Augsburg-Mühlhausen Airport. In 1985 the airport gained a control tower, which had to eventually be replaced in 1997, as it did not meet international standards for instrument flights.
In 1998 permanent on-site customs facilities were installed along with a police station. This allowed the airport to open up to the international flight market.
In 2004 Augsburg Airlines ceased operations at Augsburg Airport due to the runway being very short, affecting the profitability of scheduled flights.
