History

The history of Cologne Bonn Airport dates back to 1939 when the German Luftwaffe were building vast transport infrastructures.

In 1951 the airport was opened to commercial air traffic, taking over commercial operations from the smaller Cologne Butzweilerhof Airport. The airport serves two cities, Cologne, 16km to the north and Bonn, 24km to the south.

During the sixties two more runways were constructed along with a new passenger terminal increasing the airport’s capacity, and in 1970 a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet made the first international flight to New York.

Further expansion work continued in the late nineties when the airport saw the introduction of new parking stands and a second passenger terminal. The northern runway was also extended, giving a new total length of 3815 meters, ahead of the introduction of long haul commercial services.

Cologne Bonn is also a major hub for German Space agency’s DLR and EAC, both situated nearby the Airport with astronaut training facilities for space explorations.
