Originally, the main airport for Delhi was Safdarjung Airport, built in 1930. As passenger traffic increased, the airport was failing to meet the demand and so was moved to Palam Airport in 1962. The airport was renamed as Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport in 1986 after the addition of a new international terminal.
