Republic Airport History

Republic Airport was opened in 1928 under the management of the Fairchild Engine and Aircraft Management Company. Republic Airport was originally used as a testing ground for the aircraft manufactures Fairchild, American, Grumman and Seversky. Seversky, which changed its name to Republic Aviation, was the only manufacturer still based at Republic Airport by World War II.

Republic Aviation would continue building military aircraft at the airport through the Vietnam War. Republic Airport was purchased by the Metropolitan Airport Authority in 1963.

The New York State Department of Transportation took control of the airport in 1983 and continues to oversee the airports operations. Republic Airport is home to The American Air Power Museum which displays WWII era aircraft and allows visitors to both see and hear the stunning planes in flight.

Republic Airport sits on Long Island in the town of Farmingdale, New York. The airport’s central location in Long Island makes it the ideal destination to access New York’s many attractions.

There are three fixed-base operators at Republic Airport:

Atlantic Aviation manages a large private jet passenger terminal that includes an updated passenger waiting lobby, large executive conference room and pilot lounge with rest rooms. Atlantic Aviation also operates a hangar facility that can accommodate up to a Gulfstream G450.

Sheltair operates a well-appointed private jet passenger terminal that is equipped with amenities such as a passenger waiting area, conference room and cafeteria/vending room.Talon Air is based out of a luxurious 100,000 sq. foot facility. Their private jet passenger terminal includes an expansive passenger waiting lobby, executive lounge and conference rooms. Additionally, Talon Air operates a large hangar complex capable of storing most aircraft and has a large maintenance department.
