Hawthorne Municipal Airport was originally constructed by Jack Northrop, the founder of Northrop Aircraft Corporation, and was first known as Jack Northrop Field. Northrop Aircraft Corporation constructed and tested many different aircraft at Hawthorne Municipal Airport including the flying wing, F-5 Freedom Fighter, P-61 Black Widow and F-89 Scorpion. Northrop Aircraft Corporation deeded the airport to the city of Hawthorne in 1939. The U.S. Army used the field during World War II.
