The idea for the airport was conceived during the government of Daniel Douber Quiros in the 1970s.

It was originally named Llano Grande after its surrounding area, then it became the Aeropuerto Tomas Guardia. Although it was renamed officially to its current title, it is commonly known as the Liberia International Airport.
