Managua International Airport History
The airport was constructed and officially opened in 1968, and was known as Las Mercedes Airport.
The airport was modernised in the 1970s, including the addition of an upper floor restaurant. Augusto César Sandino was a Nicaraguan revolutionary and guerrilla leader, and the airport was renamed after him when the Sandinistas took power.
The airport was expanded and remodelled in 1996, and was renamed as Managua International Airport in 2001, and then renamed again in 2007 to its current name, Managua Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport. In 2006 plans to expand the airport were completed, including 11 gates with jetways.
