Construction to build Morristown Municipal Airport began in 1933, when a crew of 200 men began draining and grading a former meadow.

The project was funded under a depression era Civil Work Administration grant.

In 1934, further funding was granted by the Works Progress Administration and the airfield was designated as the western terminus of the transatlantic dirigible service between Germany and the U.S. Alas, the airport was still under construction when the Hindenburg began service, and the 1937 disaster ensured that the airport would never see airships arrival.

Construction on Morristown Municipal Airport was completed during World War II and used as a military base where it was a test site for Bell Telephone Labratories and training field for the Army and Navy air corp.

Upon the wars end, the airfield was returned to the town of Morrisonville and began service as a general aviation airport.

In 1951 the Continental Can Company established one of the world’s first corporate flight departments on the fields. They used converted B-24 and C-47 aircraft and built a hangar costing $225,000. Today, Morristown is still a bustling general aviation airport and the third busiest airport in the state of New Jersey.
