New Orleans Lakefront Airport History
Lakefront Airport was built in the mid-1930's. It still maintains its classic Art Deco style, and it was fully restored in 2013.
Originally named Shushan Airport for its Board president Abraham Shusha, but was renamed New Orleans Airport for a period before finally become Lakefront Airport in 1946.
During World War II, Lakefront Airport was used by the US Air Force. In the 1960s, it also served as a Cold War bomb shelter. It has been battered by multiple hurricanes, including Katrina and Isaac, but has been repaired and refurbished to stay in working condition.
