PANAMA TOCUMEN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HISTORY
Panama Tocumen International Airport is owned by Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, S.A. (also known as Tocumen, S.A.). The airport was originally built during World War II and opened in 1947, its name coming from the river Tocumen - which was diverted when the airport was built.
During the 1970s, the airport was expanded to reflect growing air travel demand and Panama’s role as a country of transit. The current passenger terminal was inaugurated in August 1978.
In 1981 the name of the airport was changed to Omar Torrijos International Airport, in honour of the Panamanian leader which died that year. But in 1989 it was changed back to Tocumen International Airport.
A major expansion and renovation of the airport has taken place in recent years, with the third phase due to complete in 2017, with the opening of the new South Terminal (T2).
