Philadelphia International Airport History

Originally, the airfield was used in 1925 as a training airfield by the Pennsylvania National Guard. Then in 1927, Charles Lindbergh, renamed the airfield ‘Philadelphia Municipal Airport’. The airport’s terminal building was only completed in 1940 and flights to the airport began. The United States Army Air Forces used the airport as a training airfield during World War II, and in 1945 the Air Force returned the airport to civil control and the airport was renamed as Philadelphia International Airport. In 1953 a new terminal opened and in the 1970s the airport began a major expansion to modernise the airport.
