Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport History
The airport is owned and operated by the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, and is classified as a reliever airport for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport was built in 1941 as Higley Field. It was then renamed after Charles Linton Williams,a World War II fighter pilot and native of the area. Then it was acquired by the US military and renamed as Williams Air Base in 1948.
It was about to be shut down in the early 90s until airlines realised that it would be useful as an alternative airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It is also commonly used as a pilot training base.
