Salerno is the capital city of the southwestern region Campania in Italy. Situated on the Tyrrhenian Sea the city became the site of the world’s first medical school, the Schola Medica Salernitana, and residential place of Vittorio Emmanuel III, King of Italy, in 1943. With its long and eventful history, Salerno is the centre of further Italian touristic attractions, such as the vast archaeological site Pompei, the major ancient Greek city Paestum as well as the village Positano on the Amalfi Coast. In fact, the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana in Italian) is a popular tourist destination as UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape and mostly known for its production of the Italian liqueur Limoncello.

History
The current airport of Salerno is locally known as Salerno-Pontecagnano Airport and was formerly the base of the Italian military air force, Aeronautica Militare. Following its establishment in 1926 smaller extension works took place in order to improve the infrastructure, which was exclusively used by the national military police of Italy (Carabinieri) and firefighters for its helipad as well as the local flight school Salerno Air Club and smaller private jets.
In fact, the air terminal was given permits for civil traffic in 2007 only. Ever since, further project for extensions were presented in order to accommodate more traffic.

Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is located near the west coastal areas of Amalfi in the village of Pontecagnano. The air terminal is approximately 7.5 miles away from the city centre.
