Stinson Municipal Airport History
Stinson Municipal Airport’s roots go back to 1915 and siblings Marjorie, Katherine and Eddie Stinson who founded Stinson School of Flying at the airports current location.
Katherine Stinson would become a world famous pilot and the first female to perform the loop-the-loop maneuver.
The government took control of the airport in the aftermath of World War I and the Stinson Municipal Airport became San Antonio’s primary commercial airport for several years. The Air Force acquired Stinson Municipal Airport during World War II and used it as a training base.
At the end of the war, Stinson Municipal Airport was returned to the city of San Antonio, however, it was no longer used for commercial service. A major renovation to the historic passenger terminal was completed in 2008 with 24,000 square feet of extra space being made available for administrative and FBO use.
