History

Ben Gurion Airport was built in 1936 and was originally called Lod Airport. In the Second World War it was used by the Royal Air Force for military air transport operations between bases located in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

In 1946 the airport received its first transatlantic route, Tel Aviv to New York. On the 10th July 1948, the airport was captured by Israeli Defence Forces and by the end of that year flights resumed.

In1973, Lod Airport was renamed to Ben Gurion International Airport in honour of Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion.
