Westerland Sylt Airport History

As the fourth largest island in German, Sylt was not linked to the mainland by road until 1927, when the 11 km Hindenburgdamm causeway was built. A small airport opened the island in 1919. During World War II and until 1961 the airport was used as a military base. When the airport was re-opened to civilian traffic in 1961 it became increasingly popular for scheduled and private flights to the island. In the 1990s a new terminal building was built with an integrated control tower.
